Imagine leading a school where students with significant social, emotional, and behavioral needs are sent because the surrounding public schools are unable to meet their intense SEL deficits.
With a small staff to collaborate with, yet knowing more is out there to learn from to define success – we meet Erinn Fauteux, who luckily allowed her curiosity to get the best of her.
As a devoted mom and wife, Erinn is the Director of PreK-6 programs at READS Academy in Massachusetts, which is a therapeutic day school for students with social, emotional, and behavioral deficits.
Previous admin decisions split the already small staff into silos; making Erinn’s job of uniting the team to service a challenging student population to find as her #1 challenge.
Erinn looked for help from a small cohort of educators in Massachusetts, which didn’t pan out as supportive. She sought out other principals to network and learn from, but never found a group that was right for her.
The truth is, this role is so unique that many of her colleagues couldn’t relate to her day-to-day experiences, or so she thought …
Even though Erinn is one of the most avid readers out there, her book studies with other leaders left her searching for more than the words on the pages.
As a long time listener to the BLBS podcast, Erinn joined the mastermind to level up as a leader and find the support she’s been looking for.
Although nervous about joining the mastermind because of how unique her setting and population is that she works with, Erinn has this to say:
“… everybody had the same worries and struggles. We talked to each other to get through it. The fact that you get the hot seat availability to showcase your unique needs and get feedback from other people, I didn’t feel so isolated.”
When asked about her connection to the mastermind, Erinn recalled, “I love the fact there’s books in The Mastermind and we actually talk about and dive into how to apply the ideas in them to our school context.”
As leaders, we are all unique as no two sites are identical. This fosters isolation due to that lack of network collaboration, which complicates professional growth.
When Erinn joined The Principal Success Path™ as part of her quest of lifelong learning, she found that her timing was impeccable:
“In The Principal Success Path™, I learned the idea of an empathy map. It was surreal that I now had a tool to engage in the hardest conversation I’ve ever had in my career. I remember sitting in the meeting and listening, I had to replay my map in my head and it really did help. That was a very, very big moment. I was like, ‘Okay, I’m so glad I invested in that program.’”
Erinn has found the confidence to tackle the hard stuff head on at her site.
Her experience in the mastermind and the The Principal Success Path™, has created a new reality for her,
“School leadership is still hard, but I’m not overwhelmed anymore.”
