This Jim Rohn quote is everywhere, “You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.”

The quote changed my life.

Because of it, I built Better Leaders Better Schools. That quote is why I joined the Iron Sharpens Iron mastermind. The Rohn quote is why I built a mastermind for school leaders.

I remember in 2015 sharing my vision with friends.

I told Matt while working out. He seemed disinterested and said, “Good luck” to get me to shut up.

I showed Dave my notebook of how I would build the podcast and mastermind. Dave told me it wasn’t going to happen.

I showed Rick at a Chicago entrepreneur event. He said, “You need a different business model. That won’t work.”

Well, here we are.

What do you have to say now Matt, Dave, and Rick?

Rohn seems to channel Goethe who said, “Tell me with who you consort and I will tell you who you are.”

I learned this first in 2015 and have been re-learning this lesson ever since.

For your organization to evolve, iterate, and take steps to the next level, it helps to interact with others on a similar journey.

Later Goethe mentions, “If I know how you spend your time then I know what might become of you.”

A wonderful investment in yourself this summer: spend time connecting with other innovative leaders in education, crafting big visions to bring back to your school community.

If you don’t, what will be the cost?

It’s hard to leap when those around you are comfortable with two feet on the ground.
