Without getting to woo-woo (and believe me, I can do that) … our bodies are important.

They are obviously the physical representation of our being in this current iteration.

The better it can function and the longer it can last, the more you can accomplish as a leader. The more you will also be around to enjoy your family and friends.

A simple story – when I lived in Belgium and the Netherlands I was shocked to see the elderly that hopped on bicycles and rode them with vigor.

And I was a bit sad too, because I reflected on my own family back home, who live a mostly sedentary lifestyle, and I just knew there was so much more available to them if they were physically able to enjoy life.

I see it far too often. This area is super neglected by many school leaders.

Now you don’t have to be an Olympic athlete, but I certainly want to help you become a healthier version of yourself.

Spiritual Tools For Awareness

When I talk about spirituality in the Leadership Optimization Compass, I am not talking about a specific religion.

What I am talking about is how to grow your awareness – isn’t that all there really is anyway, awareness?

As I’ve invested and practiced more and more mindfulness training, I’ve seen incredible benefits. These benefits exist both personally and professionally.

The most obvious thread to pull on is my ability to note the “inner dialogue” that’s happening in my mind as well as my emotions and NOT letting them control me.

This is such an important point, and I’m sure you can relate, but there are times I do things that I am embarrassed to admit. And I do them to the people I LOVE. What the heck is going on.

I can tell you with 100% certainty that meditation has changed that. I’m not perfect, but I’m a million times better.

The psychologist Jonathan Haidt says, “The emotional tail wags the rational dog.”

If you want to master your leadership, you MUST master your emotions. Growing your awareness is key.
